YOUR FIRST STEP TOWARD THE OLYMPICS
Youth Olympic Training Seminar – YOTS
Friday, August 24 to Sunday, August 26, 2018
This year, in conjunction with the 2018 Canadian Youth Championships Sail Canada (in cooperation with the Royal Canadian Yacht Club) will be hosting a two and a half day training seminar. Using a format from past Canadian Youth Championships, the seminar will be called YOTS - Youth Olympic Training Seminar.
This camp is meant for the best Canadian Youth we have in the country and thus spaces are limited. The deadline for applications is August 5th, 2018 and selected athletes will be invited to the seminar by August 10, 2018. Any applications received before the deadline may be processed and athletes may be selected (with a strong application).
Recent Olympians and current Canadian National Team members will be the main coaches for the daily sessions. This is a great opportunity to learn from the best and get expert tips on how to rig your boat and sail your boat faster.
On Saturday night RCYC will host a dinner for all clinic participants. Guest speaker at the dinner will be Richard Clarke. Richard grew up sailing on Lake Ontario and has competed in six Olympic Games, received multiple top five finishes at World Championships, and was a member of the winning team in the 2001-02 Volvo Ocean Race. And most recently, he coached the Bermudian America’s Cup Red Bull Youth Team. Richard will share his journey from RCYC Junior Club sailor to Olympian and Volvo competitor, what it took to get to the top. He will also speak about what has changed in the sailing world, and advise current youth sailors on what is needed today to follow a similar sailing career path.
On Sunday night there will be a panel discussion called “Going to the Games”, where you will have a chance to hear from Olympic Games participants: Brenda Bowskill, Graeme Saunders, Tom Ramshaw and Richard Clarke on how to get from competing in the Canadian Youth Championships to competing in the Olympic Games.
In order to apply sailors must have their coach send in a completed copy of the Sail Canada Metric Talent ID Form (see below) to the Sail Canada High Performance Coordinator Katie Yeo at email@example.com.
